7 self-care tips to survive this holiday season.

Christmas is designed to be a joyful time, but many of my patients consider it rife with stress: a time for overspending, negotiating difficult family dynamics, and too much food (and wine!).
So here are 7 self-care tips to help you survive this holiday season:
01.
Set boundaries regarding how much money you can really afford to spend. Write down a clear budget and set aside a little extra for indulgences, including outfits, for those extra social events.

02.
Communicate expectations around gifts. If you decide to give gifts (and you are under no obligation to do so), let people know how much you’re willing to spend—and stick to it! If you’re running low on cash, offer your time or help with a task, such as sewing or cooking.

03.
Volunteer your time. Spend your time with those less fortunate in your community. Volunteer Victoria is a good place to look for opportunities.

04.
Write a ‘Gratitude Letter’. Look back over the year and think of everything that went right. These can be little things—you finally planted that garden! Or bigger—secured a job. Read over the letter whenever you feel listless; you’ll be surprised how it changes your mood.

05.
Do a ‘Friend Spring Clean’. Say goodbye to the blamers, shamers, criticizers, and drama queens (or kings) in your life—anyone who detracts or distracts you from feeling your best!

06.
Decide on three self-care goals. Sure, most of us want a bigger home or a flashier car, but self-care is the most important goal one can pursue. Self-care looks different to everyone. These could be spending more time with friends, attending counselling, or joining a gym.
