Dr. Anna’s Beauty Book Club:
The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World by Melinda Gates
Nothing is more beautiful than women empowering each other. In The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World, Melinda Gates talks about the intrinsic beauty found in listening to others and find your own purpose and following it with dignity.
Here, Dr. Anna shares a few important segments from The Moment of Lift with her readers, so they may discover their potential.
Melinda Gates is an inspiring woman who has fought hard to not live in the shadows of her famous husband, Bill Gates, the co-founder of the Microsoft Corporation and one of the richest men in the world. Melinda is a mother of three and one of the world’s leading philanthropists, as the co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
In her book, Melinda details her travels and the people she has met to examine the most pressing issues facing women today including child marriage and gender inequality in the workplace.
Here are some take-aways from her book:
Take time to celebrate success (including your own!).
Women can get so caught up in trying to manage it all that they don’t pause and acknowledge when something is going right. It’s very important for us to acknowledge when our fellow women are working hard or have achieved something—let’s motivate each other as women. Investing in sisterhood forms bonds and creates an atmosphere for further success.
The best gift you can give is your time.
To just give money is not enough. Charitable donations can be whittled down to nothing due to administration costs and sometimes, mismanagement. It’s important that we give our voice (life experience & wisdom) and our time, to important causes—in addition to money.
Listen to others.
Statistics indicate a problem, not a solution. Sometimes we get caught up on details without focusing on how to fix the problem at hand. While statistics can be helpful, they can be misleading—overinflating or minimizing a problem. The best information is found in the stories of others, especially those in need. Take the time to listen to others: ask someone how they are doing, or check in with a friend to see if they need any support.
